Hickory Run State Park & Boulder Field

Just a short drive from our Lake Harmony homes, Hickory Run State Park is one of the most memorable outings in the Poconos. Its star attraction is the Boulder Field, a vast, flat expanse of rocks left behind by glaciers thousands of years ago and now a National Natural Landmark. Standing in the middle of it feels like being on another planet, and it makes for a brilliant group photo.

There’s plenty more to explore once you’ve climbed the rocks. The short trail to Hawk Falls is an easy favorite for families, leading to a pretty waterfall tucked into the woods. Longer trails wind through forest and along streams, and in summer there’s a swimming beach at Sand Spring Lake.

Visit from late spring to early fall for the best conditions. Fall brings spectacular foliage around the edges of the Boulder Field, while summer is perfect for combining a hike with a swim. Wear sturdy shoes, as the boulders are uneven and can be slippery after rain, and keep a close eye on younger kids.

Pack a picnic and make a half-day of it, then head back to the house for the hot tub.
